The deacons are ordained to the ministry of service; works of charity; proclaiming the gospel; preaching; assisting at Mass; distributing the Eucharist; serving as ministers of baptism; witnessing marriages; and leading the community in prayer, especially at funeral services and the Liturgy of the Hours.

With regard to deacons strengthened by sacramental grace, they are dedicated to the People of God, in conjunction with the bishop and his body of priests, in the service (diakonia) of the liturgy, of the Gospel and of works of charity. (Catechism of the Catholic Church).
This support ministry provides an opportunity for parish volunteers to help with a variety of tasks in the parish office, including answering phones, handling mail-outs, filing, assisting visitors and other miscellaneous office tasks.
